Escualo is a historic recording project that features masters of tango and legendary violinists, Fernando Suarez Paz and Leonardo Suarez Paz, connected beyond the familial bonds of father and son but those of tango; both being the incarnation of the genre’s rich history and a vision of its future through the violin tradition.
This is the last album of Fernando Suarez Paz, a violinist who recorded thousands of tracks and is one of the most recorded artists, having collaborated with Astor Piazzolla for over a decade, with Kronos Quartet, Sergio & Odair Assad, Yo-Yo Ma, Burt Bacharach, Lalo Schifrin, Michel Legrand, Waldo de los Rios and many others. In this discographic work he passes the torch to his son, Leonardo Suarez Paz, who grew up along side and was mentored by Astor Piazzolla and many legendary figures of tango. Fernando and Leonardo share an invaluable heritage through their proximity and work with Astor Piazzolla, Horacio Salgán, Mariano Mores, Atilio Stampone, Leopoldo Federico, Osvaldo Requena, Nestor Marconi, Osvaldo Berlingieri, Raul Garello and many others.
This project is an intimate conversation embodied by the violin duos, which Fernando dedicated to the grandson he is expecting and to tango itself. It is shared, like a play between family members and 4 generations OF tango, which may have the luck to extend to the 5th. The musicians on this album are from Leonardo's generation, Pipi Piazzolla, the grandson of Astor Piazzolla, and a childhood friend, Cristian Zárate (piano), Lautaro Greco (bandoneon), Daniel Falasca and Roberto Tormo (bass), who are featured in contemporary orchestrations of nuevo tango compositions. “This is an album in which love triumphs over the ravages of time, where phrasing flourishes beyond technique and the dense humidity of the La Plata River and perfume of jacaranda and silk floss trees prevail over the exhaust pipes of city buses. It unites and continues a tradition that constantly advances, gliding towards an unpredictable future.”
