The Newberry Consort, "Rosa das Rosas: Cantigas de Santa Maria"

Another frequent presence on Early Music Now’s roster, Chicago-based The Newberry Consort brings the colorful Rosa das Rosas — Cantigas de Santa Maria.  Saturday, March 14 at 5:00 at UWM’s Helene Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts (2419 E Kenwood Blvd), preceded by 3:00 silent auction and chocolate reception.  Alfonso X, an ailing 13th century king of Castile, prayed to the Virgin Mary for divine intercession. Upon his recovery, he commissioned cantigas praising the Virgin and her miraculous works. The Newberry Consort expands to 11 performers to tell this compelling story, incorporating projected images of the lavish illustrations from the original manuscripts.
