Robin Verheyen NY Quartet CMA Premiere Beyond Illuminations

Robin Verheyen is the rising star of Belgian jazz. He’s been an established jazz musician in Belgium for years and also gets high acclaim abroad for his work with his NY Quartet and jazz masters such as pianist Marc Copland. When he was still less than 25 years of age, he moved to New York, where he soon became one of the leading lights of the clubs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. In 2008 he set up his NY Quartet, an ambitious band with heavyweights from the New York scene. The quartet combines great musicality with an inexhaustible drive and sense of adventure. Its unusual combination of soprano sax and trumpet is particularly striking. In 2012 the quartet released their critically acclaimed album Trinity on the label 52creations. In 2013 Robin Verheyen received the New Jazz Works grant from Chamber Music America to write the work 'Beyond Illuminations' for this quartet. This performance will be the East Coast premiere of this new work which brings together Robin's research of West African Rhythm in Senegal and the classical compositional language of Olivier Messiaen.

Press Quote:

Sharon Mizrahi about Trinity in the NYC Jazz Record:

"Yet the minimalist opening to “Roscopaje” offers
the most striking textural contrast of all. Verheyen
embraces silence as an instrument in and of itself as he
punctuates the first minute with stray, half-finished
and trailed-off notes. Though the band soon interjects
at full speed, the saxist’s brief adventure remains the
highlight of the entire album, illustrating Verheyen’s
mastery of uncanny innovation"
